INTERVAL TRAINING: Who, What, When, Where, Why, How?
Who?: Unless you’re in cardiac rehab, physical therapy, or disabled, YOU should be doing interval training.
What?: Interval training is a type of “cardio” that focuses on manipulating heart rate and energy expenditure to promote a higher metabolism with the goal of burning more calories AT REST, not during exercise.
When?: 3-5 times per week, on off days or after resistance training programs. It should only take 10-20 minutes MAX!
Where?: ANYWHERE. Any piece of cardio equipment (treadmill and rower are my favorite).
Why?: If you do standard cardio of one general speed for extended period of time you are absolutely burning calories during the workout, but once you are done exercising you are DONE BURNING CALORIES. Interval training burns less calories during the workout, but allows your body to burn calories for 36 hours AFTER EXERCISE.
